Internet Explorer 8 crashes today, 15 December 2010!

I have had two clients call me today regarding Internet Explorer 8 crashing as soon as it opens.  Both had the Yahoo toolbar installed.  When that toolbar was disabled, IE 8 worked as well as it ever does.  Here are the specifics on how to fix the problem:

  • Right-click on the Internet Explorer icon.
  • In the list that pops up, select "Start without add-ons"
  • In the now open IE, click the Tools menu and go down to the bottom and select Internet Options.
  • Select the Programs tab in the window that opens and click the "Manage Add-ons" button near the bottom of the window.
  • A window will pop up that shows Toolbars and Extensions" selected to the left and a list of items on the right.
  • Scroll down the right-hand list until you find the Yahoo toolbar listed.
  • Right click the entry and select "disable".
  • Disable any other Yahoo entries.
  • Close the Manage Add-ons window
  • Click OK at the bottom of the Internet Options window.
  • Close IE.
  • You should now be able to open IE without any trouble.
Please let me know if you find flaws in this procedure as soon as you find them so I can correct it quickly.

Thank you and good luck!

IE had a lot of problems in the past especially if you're a web developer. They're getting a lot better but still not anywhere close to Firefox.
