Experts Exchange saves computer consultant from ugly confrontation with wife and mother!!

I was dead meat.

Yesterday I took apart my mother's iMac to put in a new hard drive and memory and install Snow Leopard, the current Apple OS for the Mac.  Her system had been running two versions behind and was exhibiting strange behavior.  The iMac was difficult to open and, contrary to the way most iMacs were built until the aluminum models came out, this one opened from the front.  I couldn't find help on the 'Net, but figured out how to remove the LCD panel (built in screen) so I could get to the hard drive underneath.

Anyway, I put in the new drive and memory, reconnected the LCD, booted the iMac, and NO PICTURE!  Gaaaaaah!  As I said, it's Mom's machine and I am leaving Sunday afternoon for home.  I worked on it for two more hours, until about 11PM Friday night, and then I gave up.

I did one last thing before trying to go to sleep - I posted what I had done and what I had seen on Experts Exchange (EE).

I reported to you about EE several days ago in this post.

I waited for a response for another hour then hit the rack with nothing.

I woke up this morning (got myself a gun...) and checked my email.  There it was!  Someone (robertcerny) had posted some help.  I followed his concise advice, and IT WORKED!! (YAY!)  I was able to finish getting the machine up a few hours ago (all programs reloaded, updates run, and data moved over from the old drive).

He saved my butt. I was concerned I might have to buy Mom a new computer (or, at least, pay for a big chunk of one, which would NOT have made MBH happy).  I won't.  It's all working fine.

So, thank you robertcerny, and thank you EE.  Now I can go to EE and help someone else, paying it forward one more time!
