APOD - The Astronomy Picture of the Day Website

Having just posted about our collective lack of awe and amazement, here's a cure:

If you have never been to APOD, I strongly recommend you bookmark it and look at the site to start your every day.

I go there every morning to see what new wonder has been posted.  There are few words to describe the majesty of the universe.  Thank goodness we have pictures.

Go to their archives.  There are over ten years of daily pictures to go through.  I have about 350 of them (and growing) on my Mac and use them as my screensaver.  As MLB would say, "It's hawsome!"

    Actually, he'd say it's "Teh hawsome!" I don't know why. These bloggers can't speak respectable English!

      Have you Googled "teh" to see what it means?  It's actually kinda cool!  Besides, this was all put together by a newer generqation of folks and, like people from Alabama and Australia (sorry, Thomas!), they all talk funny.

    It's a great site. It's run by the little brother of the rabbi at the prep school where I teach. And I know your little brother since he was doing his Ph.D. work on SN1987A and he had to come up to Baltimore to the Space Telescope Science Institute.

    Happy birthday, by the way.

      I didn't know it was run out of Maryland.  Silly me, I assumed it was run out of the colder regions of Europe.  I f I had thought about it, I would have realized that "antwrp" is a server (duh!) and not a place.

      Do you mind sharing with me what you do/did at STSI?  Or did you meet him elsewhere on his visits (and does Mrs. BA know)?  (;>}

        I left STScI in 1994 to get my Ph.D. at Dartmouth. Used to be a lowly technical assistant for the Faint Object Spectrograph.

        Did meet Mrs. BA when I had gone down to UVA to interview for grad school. Knew BA's officemate/roommate from when his officemate was at Penn (my undergrad alma mater and where one of the APOD guys got his Ph.D. - the little brother of the rabbi at my school).

      Heh!  I was trying to figure out where I mentioned that today is my birthday.  Couldn't find one.  Then, I decided to take a look at the Bad Astronomy website (where MLB lives), and found a public note!

      Thanks, Phil!  And thanks to everyone who reads the BABlog and came here to look and pass on their wishes for me!

    First, it was your little brother, Phil, who introduced me to your blog and now he has informed his readers that today is your birthday. So, happy birthday, Sid! Live long and prosper!

    Second, I have been a regular reader of APOD for over seven years' and I often download their cool pictures onto my hard-drive. However, now they have gone and spoiled things by imposing a dull grey background colour scheme on their web-site. Whiskey-Tango-Foxtrot?! It's bad enough that one has to put up with dull grey winter skies in the bloody morning, here in London, U.K., without being greeted by the same grey dullness on my computer screen when I turn it on first thing in the day. Whoever their web-developer is, wants his/her ass kicked.

      Have you told them how you feel about the background color/colour?  I don't particularly care for hte gray, either, but I go there for the beautiful photos and write-ups, so I truly don't notice much else.

        I was going to, as soon as I found out what their e-mail address is, but I now see this morning that they have changed the background colour back to its normal white rendering. They probably had numerous complaints about the new(!) grey background colour!
