Humming with the fools
I categorize myself as a realistic tree-hugger. In other words, I know we have to remove some trees to accommodate the growth of humanity. I just feel that we should always replace some of the downed trees with hardwoods. We take, and we should give something back.
So, I bought a new car yesterday. I must have space in my vehicle for the myriads of things I carry to be able to perform my job efficiently. There are no SUVs hybrids on the market that get decent gas mileage, so I bought the next best thing, the Honda CR-V. Honda rates these vehicles as getting between 27 and 30 MPG on the highway. Not great, but better than any other car on the SUV market. And the rating system they use is the new one that all car manufacturers must adhere to over the next few years, so it is fairly accurate. I'll know more as I use it.
While I was talking to my friend Ron, who works for Honda Carland in Roswell or Alpharetta (I'm never totally sure where one starts and the other ends), I mentioned that Hummer dealers are probably hurting right now, and I added "rightfully so". I don't think those vehicles should be allowed to ride on our roads and highways. I won't go into all the reasons I feel that way, but I will say that any personal automobile that gets 12 miles to the gallon or less should never have been sold. They are a danger on the roads (they're too damned big!), and they foul the environment.
Anyway, Ron told me that he didn't think the Hummer dealers were hurting too much. I hoped he was wrong.
Tonight, I ran across this article indicating that I was right, although not as much as I would like, but it underlines just how selfish we can be. The current owners don't care that gas is $4/gallon or more, they don't care that their vehicles are helping to poison the Earth.
Personally, I find it sad, selfish, rude, and totally irresponsible that these people drive them. However, they still have the right to be all those things.
So, it is our best interest to come up with alternative fuels for our automotive use as soon as possible. If people are going to purchase this type of vehicle, maybe we can find a way to power them without killing humanity while they do so.
